I developed many of the ideas I share on this website at the Urban School of San Francisco, my place of employment from 1981 to 2013. In addition to my position as a teacher and the chair of Urban's Math Department, I directed the Center for Innovative Teaching (CIT) from 2007 to 2012.

Urban offered an extraordinarily supportive environment with an emphasis on teacher collaboration, discussion of student learning, and appropriate use of technology. As a result, I was able to develop classroom-tested courses, units, and approaches that can strengthen, complement and enrich the math program at any school.

I share these with the broader educational community on this website, at conferences, through summer workshops, in a blog, and as a consultant.
